Realizing Cost Efficiencies by Delivering Re-usable, Open Databases

MultiGen-Paradigm's professional services team built a 64 geo-cell visual database of the Travis AFB, California area and delivered it in industry-standard, open formats. The database was designed to support out-the-window image generation for flight simulation, with an emphasis on airport operations at all times of day. It contains a high-detail airport that provides height and velocity cues to support taxi, takeoff, final descent and landing. It includes 1m geo-specific imagery, runways, taxiways, parking areas, surface markings, airfield lighting systems and geo-specific buildings extruded from imagery. A rich set of cultural features including buildings, trees, towers, and general population lighting populate all areas of the database.

The database was built using a combination of MultiGen Creator and Creator Terrain Studio. FlightIG allowed the customer to fly through the database on a Windows-based laptop at 60Hz. FlightIG is based on Vega Prime, and includes the Vega Prime FX, LADBM, IRScene, IRSensor, and Distributed Rendering modules.

This database was deployed on multiple image generator platforms: an ESIG 4530, an Aechelon PC image generator, and a Meta VR PC image generator. The efforts required to produce the derivative databases were analyzed and the cost-savings associated with reusing open databases in this manner were verified.
