Realtime 3D Road Simulation Used to Evaluate Highway Projects
The image shown here is from an application delivered to the California
Department of Transportation. The model includes a 2.5 mile section
of Interstate 710 in Southern California. The simulation is being
used to evaluate different alternatives for the planned beautification
elements for the highway.
One of the challenges that the modeling team faced was managing
the extensive amount of civil engineering data submitted by Caltrans.
In addition, creating unique textures that accurately displayed
a "weathered" look to paving elements and signs tested the creative
abilities of the modelers.
The database was created with Multigen Creator and Road Tools.
The custom Vega NT simulation runs on Windows NT based hardware.
