Training truck drivers efficiently to be safe in a variety of road, weather and driving situations

Thales offers the full spectrum of training options to enable its customers to achieve their ambitions, from consulting to comprehensive training packages. Thales developed the Thales TRUST driving database to train commercial, public service and other heavy goods vehicle drivers on Thales truck simulators. The database covers over 300 square miles, (480 sq km), incorporating a wide range of road types, conditions, and built up areas, and with the envoronment varying from rolling farmland to mountainous terrain. The application provides a realistic driving experience and is deployed using THALESview on a PC computer.

Although the basic terrain and road system had been created previously, and the information necessary for traffic movement and terrain feedback was taken from this, these essential areas could not be changed. However, improvements in terrain smoothness and road curvature were necessary. New features away from the road areas were added, including buildings, folliage and street furntiure--all designed to improve speed cues and visual reality.

MultiGen Creator Pro was used to develop these new features. Using newly gathered photographic data, a set of textures was created for the roads and terrain areas. The database was fully retextured. Using these new, high resolution photographs, all extra features created were also textured and blended to give as natural and realistic a look as possible while fulfilling all necessary training requirements.
