STN ATLAS Elektronik GmbH Simulation Division:
Vehicle handling training for the Norwegian Army
This terrain scene near Bergen, Norway, is part of the database
built for the Norwegian Army to train tank drivers in vehicle handling.
The model was built using the MultiGen-Paradigm family of database
authoring tools. The source data came from 10 meter terrain grid
and 30 centimeter ortho-photos and original photographs of the Norway
countryside, creating the high terrain precision necessary to test
driver's reaction was a challenge.
The development team enhanced the application by providing a scalable
snow height. Source data was parameterized in layers for summer
and winter. The application allows for ditches in the summer and
snow drifts in the winter. The database is composed of five different
parts of original terrain spanning from Bergen area in the west,
over to Oslo area, and up to Tromsoe in the north.
