MULTIGEN-PARADIGM VALIDATES FEASIBILITY AND COST SAVINGS OF SHARING VISUAL DATABASES
Open, Standards-based Databases Built With Commercial-off-the-Shelf Tools Provide Visual Simulation Industry with Cost Efficiencies

Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) - Orlando, FL - December 1, 2003 - MultiGen-Paradigm, Inc., a leading provider of real-time 3D visual simulation software solutions, validated the economic feasibility of sharing visual databases. MultiGen-Paradigm proved the feasibility of sharing visual databases through the development and delivery of an industry-standard, open format 64 geo-cell visual database of the U.S. Air Force's Travis AFB in California.

The Travis Open Database was built using a combination of MultiGen Creator and Creator Terrain Studio. The database was designed to support out-the-window image generation for flight simulation, with an emphasis on airport operations at all times of day. It contains a high-detail airport that provides height and velocity cues to support taxi, takeoff, final descent and landing. The detailed site includes one-meter geo-specific imagery, runways, taxiways, parking areas, surface markings, airfield lighting systems and geo-specific buildings extruded from imagery. A rich set of cultural features including buildings, trees, towers and general population lighting cover four geocells of five meter imagery surrounding the detailed site in the database. The entire database covers an 8 by 8 degree area. FlightIG allows the USAF to fly through the database on a Windows-based laptop at 60Hz. FlightIG is based on Vega Prime, and includes the Vega Prime FX, LADBM, IRScene, IRSensor, and Distributed Rendering modules. By leveraging an open database that can be shared on different platforms, USAF can substantially reduce cost by eliminating the need to completely rebuild derivative databases for different platforms. Even though this study effort concentrated on the out-the-window solution, sensor database developments can also take advantage of the concept of sharing with open formats.

Creator Terrain Studio, MultiGen-Paradigm's commercial-off-the-shelf, standards-based terrain database generation tool captures the workflow and preserves data at critical points in the production process to support reusability. To do this, the database production process is broken down into several smaller tasks, and then the output data from each task is saved and delivered. Because the open database concept applies to all data types, the data can be reused anywhere along the production dataflow.
