FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information, please contact: David Simmons, Public Relations Stephanie Groswirt MultiGen-Paradigm, Inc. Announces Freeway Beautification Project with California Department of Transportation San Jose, Calif. - February 21, 2000 MultiGen-Paradigm, Inc., a pioneer in the field of urban simulation, today announced the award of a new contract with SGI and the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans). CalTrans is responsible for the design, construction, maintenance and operation of the Interstate Highway System in California. MultiGen-Paradigm's services group will develop a customized realtime 3D database utilizing its core modeling and simulation tools MultiGen CreatorŠ , a 3D modeler, RoadPro, a tool specifically designed for generating three-dimensional roads that meet strict real-world engineering standards and Vega, a realtime 3D simulation toolkit for building fully interactive 3D visualization applications. SGI will deliver the necessary hardware to run the visualization. "The Interstate Highway System in Southern California is perhaps one of the densest transportation areas in the world," said Gary Bush, of the California Department of Transportation. "This technology will help us visualize the key components of our highway beautification program. We will be able to better explore various landscaping material alternatives and make the right decisions on how to upgrade our roads." The freeway visualization database will span a 2.5-mile section of the 710 Freeway in Southern California. The resulting 3D model will help transportation planners understand the impact of development and retrofit work before it begins. The urban simulation will also aid with consensus building activities by offering realistic and high-impact presentations of the improvements. When completed, operators will be able to view sound walls, overpasses, and exits and determine the appropriate types of materials for these highway elements. "MultiGen-Paradigm's solution will enable CalTrans to better understand the visual impacts of their plans before beginning construction," said Brian Bartel, vice president of marketing for MultiGen-Paradigm. "There is no better way to build consensus around a proposed project than an objective, realtime 3D simulation. " In addition to completing the 710 Freeway project, MultiGen-Paradigm will train CalTrans engineers in seven California district offices on the use of the software, giving each office the opportunity to use the tools for additional highway projects. The entire project including the database development and engineer training is expected to be complete by June 2000.
